Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Program
For 19 years, Colibri Boutique Hotels has been at the forefront of environmental, social and governance responsibility. Our entire philosophy is thoughtfully designed to give back to our planet and the people, places and things it inhabits.
To help us incorporate this in our daily practices, we are delighted to have Alejandra Cornejo as our full time Social Responsibility Manager. Alejandra is a Biologist (UAM) with multidisciplinary training; in arts and sociology (UNAM). She specialized in Environmental Education and Education for Sustainability and has more than 15 years of experience in this field.
We have two major programs that we run, We Care, which focuses on our holistic commitment towards ethical excellence in all matters of the environment, our team members and their families. And the Giving Back program which focuses on how we can give back to the wider community with educational programs, donations and special events.
AWARDS
ENVIRONMENT
BEACH CLEANING
Every year, we take pride in cleaning Tulum’s public beaches, and we collaborate with Ocean Conservancy, ZOFEMAT, and the Municipal Ecology Department for the international beach cleaning day.
TURTLES
Colibri Boutique Hotels supports the “Kanan Aak” program for the Protection & Conservation of Turtles of Tulum. The program patrols the beaches, marks and moves eggs, and helps hatchlings reach the water. We fund the patrol staff and transportation.
RECYCLING
We have extensive recycling for all hotel waste and provide recycling bins for our guests and on public beaches by our properties.
COMPOST & HERB GARDEN
La Zebra Tulum’s latest initiative – a sustainable garden of aromatic plants & herbs and that uses the compost produced by our kitchens.
WATER MANAGEMENT
Colibri Boutique Hotels is committed to responsible water use and sustainability. In addition, we collaborate with local communities to raise awareness about responsible water use practices.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Our team has been working hard the last few months with Moce Yax Kuxtal A.C (a citizen-led organization that seeks to spread the rational, intelligent and sustainable use of natural resources) to create a compost garden for the kitchen’s organic waste.
EDUCATION
BIO FERIA
We participated in Tulum’s first Bio Feria, where our Social Responsibility Manager gave a seminar on deplastification, and La Zebra’s Executive Chef talked about the success of our compost project. The three-day event focused on gardening, mobility, energy, sustainable fashion, product design, ecotourism, market, life in nature, and gastronomy.
STATE FORUM ON ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
We were thrilled to participate in the annual International Day of Environmental Education by having our Social Responsibility Manager, Alejandra Cornejo present at the V State Forum on Environmental Education. International Environmental Education Day has been celebrated January 26th since 1975.
PLANETARIUM VISITS
We believe that education is the foundation for healthy, happy communities. That’s why, we have implemented a program aimed at increasing interest in science among primary school students in Tulum. Since May 2019, we have partnered with ADO to bring students to the SAYAB Planetarium in Playa del Carmen every month to learn about the geological history of the Yucatan Peninsula.
COMMUNITY
BANCO DE TAPITAS
Making a difference, one bottle cap at a time. We collect and donate plastic bottle caps to fund cancer treatment for children in need.
TELETÓN
We are proud to support Teletón, an international organization that provides free therapies to children and adolescents with disabilities. We regularly donate prizes for their silent auctions.
